My family runs a salon and spa, and I’m in charge of designing the menus, posters, and banners for marketing and promotion.
I try to consider what draws in customers, like what fonts and images are appealing to the intended audience. Most of the designs I make are displayed on poster boards in front of the store and banners on the front window, so it’s really important that I make something that will get potential consumer’s attention, especially in a high foot-traffic area.
I really enjoy doing these projects because not only do I get to help out my family in some way, I can also get creative. Graphic design is a path I considered because I’m interested in art, but I decided to go the Computer Science route because there’s more potential and diversity, which is why I’m interested in UX/UI Design.
When I first started doing this, I didn’t realize how stressful it was to be in charge of decisions like this because design could truly change someone’s entire perception of a brand. I’ve watched videos of how rebrands changed the entire trajectory of a business because of a font change or a color scheme shift, and I’d end up spend hours on such a simple project that looked like it took 10 minutes. Now that I’ve been doing it for a while, I can appreciate the effort that goes into design in general whether it be for advertisements or web design, which plays into software engineering. Just like software engineering and UX Design, so much goes on behind the scenes, and meticulous planning is required before something is implemented.
